A Winter Proposal at Roo Winery: Ethan & Sheriden’s Surprise Mountain Moment
There are some love stories I get invited into that linger with me long after I pack up my camera and drive home down the mountain. Ethan and Sheriden’s proposal at Roo Winery in Ellijay, Georgia is one of those stories, the kind that reminds me why I wholeheartedly cherish what I do.
When Ethan reached out through my website, he told me he’d been dating Sheriden for four years and finally felt ready to ask her to marry him. He was buzzing with excitement, the kind that leaps off the screen even through a simple inquiry form. His plan? A surprise proposal at Roo Winery while Sheriden thought she was simply away for a girls’ weekend. She had been convinced for months that the proposal would happen sometime next spring which made this December day even more perfect.
The Setting: Roo Winery’s Barrel Room
Roo Winery sits tucked in the mountains of North Georgia, and on December 6th, winter gifted us the most beautiful weather.
Ethan had gone all out. He rented the entire underground barrel room, a breathtaking space lined with aged wine barrels and glowing with warm string lights. In the center sits a long wooden table often used for rehearsal dinners, but at the far end, he created an intimate setup just for the two of them: wine poured, a charcuterie spread waiting, and fuzzy blankets draped over the chairs. A cozy sanctuary carved out just for this moment.
I arrived two hours early to check lighting, walk the space, and make sure everything was aligned. Ethan showed up an hour before go-time, and the minute he walked in, you could feel the mixture of nerves and pure anticipation radiating off of him. He talked about Sheriden the entire time; how she’s a high school teacher, how he practiced asking her parents for their blessing, how long he’d been planning this, and how important it was that the moment felt unique and special for her.
At one point, he took the ring out of his pocket and stared at it quietly, almost reverently. You could see him rehearsing what he wanted to say, pacing with a smile that he couldn’t wipe off if he tried. It was one of those rare times where I felt like I was witnessing something sacred before it even happened.
The Moment
The venue coordinator radioed that the girls were on their way down, and we quickly got into position behind the massive wooden double doors. They creaked open, and as soon as Sheriden stepped inside, her breath caught. Her eyes filled, completely shocked and overwhelmed.
Ethan walked out from the corner of the room, nervous and glowing, and began telling her everything he’d been practicing in his head for an hour. And then, with the mountains peeking through the windows behind them and the barrel room lights twinkling around them, he dropped to one knee.
It was raw, emotional, and completely theirs. They didn’t need direction. They didn’t need posing. They were just present — lost in each other and in the magic of a moment they’ll remember forever.
After the Yes
After the proposal and a few quiet moments for them to hold each other and breathe it all in, we stepped outside for photos with the sweeping mountain backdrop.
Inside the barrel room, Ethan and Sheriden got to sign the engagement barrel, a tradition for couples who get engaged or married at Roo Winery. We took photos of their signatures, their wine glasses clinking in celebration, and some cozy Christmas scenes (because truly, is there anything more magical than a December engagement?).
Every part of the day felt intentional, warm, and deeply personal, the kind of proposal that reminds me why I love capturing love stories like these. It’s not about the perfect pose or the perfect lighting. It’s about connection, emotion, nervous pacing, whispered words, shaking hands, and the overwhelming joy of “yes.”
Why I Love These Moments
One thing I always want my couples to feel is that their story matters. Not as a template. Not as a Pinterest moment to recreate. But as something real, specific, intimate, and full of emotion.
Ethan and Sheriden’s proposal was exactly that.
And if you’re dreaming of a proposal, engagement, or intimate moment captured with warmth, emotion, and storytelling at the heart of it all, I’d be honored to step into that moment with you.
